Non-Writerly Friends, A Conversation

Here is a paraphrase of an actual conversation I had with an actual Non-Writerly Friend.

Me: Yum, dinner was delish. So glad we were able to get together!

Non-Writerly Friend (NWF): Me, too! Wanna go get some coffee somewhere?

Me: *checks watch, sees that it's 9:30pm* Um, actually, I need to get home.

NWF: Why??

Me: Um. You know that book I told you about? The one I'm writing...?

NWF: Oh, yeah....

Me: Well, I need to write it.

NWF: *stares* What?

Me: Yeah, this is my only writing time.

NWF: Oh. *pause* Just skip it tonight.

Me: *laughs* I would, but I can't. I get kind of upset if I don't reach my daily goals.

NWF: (???)

Me: Um, like a To-Do list, sort of.

NWF: (???) Coffee?

Me: Sorry, next week?

NWF: I don't want to go home yet!

Me: Oh. Um...

NWF: (???)

Me: (!!!)

NWF: (???)

Me: (!!!)

NWF: *stares* *blinks* Fine, I guess I won't FORCE you...

Me: *laughs* Sorry, it's late anyway.

NWF: Not really. You used to stay out with me!

Me: Yeahhhh. I just...*struggles for words*

NWF: (???)

Me: ...like...to write...now. *checks watch* *feels anti-social*

NWF: Fine. *sighs* *stares*

Me: *stares* *smiles* Okay, well, goodnight!

NWF: *pouts* Goodnight.

*hug* *awkward wave*

/end convo

I adore my non-writerly friends to pieces, but sometimes...they just don't get it. :)

I love you, writerly friends!<333

  1. LOL.. oh boy! I once was telling a friend that I was feeling really edgy because it had been two days since I'd written anything, and she was like.. oh that's okay, I'm sure you need the break. LOL no, I don't! what I need to do is sit my butt on that chair and write.. she thought I was being too hard on myself... when in reality, I was edgy because when I write I feel so much better.. I never understood my husband's "need" to work and until I started writing. It's like an addiction.. too long without it and the withdrawal symptoms kick in.

    1. Haha, yes, it's so foreign to them! I'm the same way when I don't write. She was kind of looking at me like I was crazy, lol.

  2. Amanda-You can join a new clique that was just started. Reclusive Writer's Clique. ;0) My SIL gives me the same guff. She just doesn't understand that I really have fun doing it. It's my little party. LOL.

  3. Oh man, I'm so bad at giving in to peer pressure! I'll end up going to hang out with friends but then I feel bad that I haven't written and am just moody when we're hanging out. So it's a lose-lose situation, lol. They should just trust me when I say I can't hang out...

    1. I was really close to giving in, mostly because it was just getting more and more awkward as I tried to resist and explain, haha. She's an extrovert, so it made it even harder for her to understand. I would have been moody too if I gave in :)

  4. I get the opposite occasionally too. "I'll do this so you can go write." Great, but inspiration isn't always just a tap waiting to be turned on!

    1. Haha! I haven't encountered that problem yet, but I'd probably like that better :D

  5. I know how you feel. My writing time is whenever I can pack it in, usually late at night while my husband plays with his Playstation 3.

I don't usually get awkward looks and such for telling people I need to write. Nope, those looks are reserved for the moment when they hear me discussing how to punch a hole in someones stomach without them dying instantly(research for a scene in chapter 28), or the best way to kill an enemy.

Let's just say I've learned to talk a little quieter and to explain before I ask the stranger questions. Its hard to get any work done when people keep eyeballing you like you're about to start running around lopping off heads. Amusing, but not very helpful, lol. :)p
